At Costa Brava Mediterranean Foods, we collaborate to preserve forests and their wildlife.

On June 5th, and in celebration of World Environment Day, at Costa Brava Mediterranean Foods we are proud to share some good news: we are collaborating with the Sèlvans Association to preserve and protect a historic forest in the Sant Iscle de Colltort Valley, located in the municipality of Sant Feliu de Pallerols, very close to our production plants in La Garrotxa (Girona).

The agreement protects 5.36 hectares of a centuries-old holm oak forest (Quercus ilex), which is of high ecological value and a priority for conservation. The forest lies within the area of two volcanoes (the Tuta Volcano and the Can Tià Volcano), which hold both landscape and geological significance for the region.

This initiative is aimed at offsetting the impact of our company on biodiversity (our « land use ») by preserving an area equivalent in size to the space occupied by our offices, factories, and warehouses in the Vall d’Hostoles. It was made possible through a financial contribution toward the ecosystem services of the forest property, specifically through the purchase of logging rights for the most ecologically valuable section of the forest. This allows the landowner to receive income from clearly defined forest areas, which, under the agreement, will be reserved for natural regeneration until at least 2035, allowing nature to flourish in its full splendor and potential.

Offsetting our company’s impact on biodiversity

Through this collaboration with Sèlvans Association and the forest landowners, we help preserve a scarce, fragmented, and threatened natural capital. We contribute to the creation of a network of unique, mature forests destined for natural evolution in Catalonia. We also support the implementation of the Natural Heritage and Biodiversity Strategy of Catalonia, and the Catalan Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation.

Moreover, we highlight the immense ecosystem services provided by these forests, making concrete progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — particularly: SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 13 (Climate Action).

At Costa Brava Mediterranean Foods (Grup Cañigueral), we want to express our gratitude, support, and recognition to Sèlvans Association (www.selvans.ong) and encourage more companies to join the fight against climate change and the preservation of our forest heritage.
There is always a better way to do things — let’s find it. It’s time to act.
